How heavy is an e-bike?

How much an E-Bike weighs depends largely on its design. According to ENGWE, the ENGWE Mapfour N1 Air weighs around 16 kilograms, while JOBOBIKE says the JOBOBIKE Robin Pro weighs around 35 kilograms. The ADAC considers about 25 kilograms to be the point at which carrying a bike up stairs can become very cumbersome.

Below, we compare the weights of our E-Bikes, explain what the kilos consist of, and look at when the weight really becomes a problem in everyday use. At the very bottom, you'll find models to compare.

Light E-Bike or Lots of Features?

Two bikes show how far apart the weights can be. According to ENGWE, the ENGWE Mapfour N1 Air with 28-inch wheels weighs around 16 kilograms. It has a 360 watt-hour (Wh) battery and mechanical disc brakes. According to Vogue, the Vogue Prestige weighs 27 kilograms and comes with a mid-drive motor, a 522 Wh battery, hydraulic disc brakes, a suspension fork, and a suspension seatpost.

That's a difference of around eleven kilograms. In return for the extra eleven kilograms, the Vogue gives you more battery capacity, suspension, and hydraulic brakes. Whether those extra kilos are worth it to you depends on how often you need to carry the bike.

Why Is an E-Bike So Heavy?

An E-Bike has to carry its motor and battery. It also often includes components that a lightweight bicycle leaves out: suspension, a luggage rack, lighting, and wide tires. The ADFC also assumes that Pedelecs are heavier, which their tires have to support.

You can see this clearly with the JOBOBIKE Robin Pro. According to JOBOBIKE, it has a suspension fork, a suspension seatpost, wide 26 x 4.0-inch tires, and a 960 Wh battery, and it weighs around 35 kilograms. The JOBOBIKE Astra, with 27.5-inch tires, a hydraulic suspension fork, and a 540 Wh battery, weighs around 30 kilograms.

How Much Does an E-Bike Weigh Without the Battery?

We have not checked the battery weight alone for the models listed here, so we are not giving a figure. One thing is clear: A removable battery makes the bike lighter to carry. If your bike's battery can be removed and you carry the bike down to the basement, take the battery out first and carry it separately.

When Does the Weight Become a Problem?

As long as you park at ground level, hardly ever. If you have to carry the bike up stairs, it's a different story. The ADAC recommends trying to lift the bike before buying, as it can become very cumbersome at around 25 kilograms.

The motor's position also makes a difference. According to the ADAC, a rear hub motor makes it more difficult to carry a bike up stairs. The JOBOBIKE Ace Pro and the JOBOBIKE Robin Pro, for example, have a rear-wheel motor. According to the manufacturers, the Vogue Prestige and the JOBOBIKE Astra have a mid-drive motor, which the ADAC says feels similar to riding a conventional bicycle.

What Is a Good Weight for an E-Bike?

That depends on where the bike needs to go. If you take it on the train, in the car, or into your home, every kilogram counts. According to JOBOBIKE, the JOBOBIKE Ace Pro weighs 24 kilograms and can be folded. The ENGWE O20 Boost weighs 26.5 kilograms according to ENGWE and can also be folded. You can find more bikes of this type among the folding E-Bikes.

If the bike stays in the yard or garage, you can trade lower weight for more features. The ADAC names range, weight, and battery charging time as the key criteria when choosing a model. In that case, a heavier bike with a larger battery may be the better choice.

Bike Weight Is Not the Same as Payload

Don't confuse the bike's weight with how much it is allowed to carry. The manufacturer specifies the maximum payload separately: according to JOBOBIKE, 120 kilograms for the Ace Pro, Astra, and Robin Pro, and according to ENGWE, 150 kilograms for the O20 Boost. For the ENGWE P275 SE, ENGWE specifies a maximum total weight of 120 kilograms.

If you weigh more or transport a lot, this figure is more important than the bike's own weight. The ADAC then recommends hydraulic rim or disc brakes.
