Frequently asked questions
Is a fatbike legal in the UK?
Yes, if it is an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC): a motor with a continuous rated power of no more than 250 W that only assists while you pedal and stops assisting at 15.5 mph (25 km/h). An EAPC is treated as a normal bicycle. Most fatbikes at Gofatbike meet these rules. The exceptions are off-road models such as the ENGWE X20, X24 and X26 and the OUXI GT-2000, which are not allowed on public roads; this is stated on the product page. A bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a moped or motorcycle.
What are the rules for fatbikes in the UK in 2026?
An EAPC fatbike (250 W, assistance only while pedalling, cut-off at 15.5 mph) follows the rules for bicycles: it does not need a licence, registration, tax or insurance, and a helmet is not compulsory. You must be 14 or over to ride an EAPC on public roads (gov.uk). If your bike does not meet the EAPC rules it counts as a motorcycle or moped, which needs a driving licence, insurance and a motorcycle helmet.
Do you need a driving licence for a fatbike?
No. An EAPC does not need a licence, and it does not have to be registered, taxed or insured. It just has to meet the EAPC rules: a 250 W continuous rated motor, assistance only while you pedal and no assistance above 15.5 mph. A bike that does not meet these rules is not an EAPC and is treated as a moped or motorcycle.
What is the minimum age to ride a fatbike?
In the UK you must be 14 or over to ride an electric bike (EAPC) on public roads. Younger children can ride kids' fatbikes and mini fatbikes with a smaller frame and 16-inch wheels (roughly ages 5 to 12) on private land, not on the road. The right size depends on height and build.
What is the difference between a V8 and V20 fatbike?
Both series follow the same traffic rules: 250-watt motor and assistance up to 25 km/h. The V20 is made by QM Wheels and comes in variants like the V20 Pro, V20 Mini, and V20 Cross. The V8 is part of OUXI, with models like the V8 Ultra and V8 Pro Max. Wheel size, battery capacity, brake system, and riding position differ per model, so check the specs on the product page before you decide.
How far can you ride on a full battery?
A full battery typically gets you between 50 and 80 kilometres. The exact range depends on battery size, your weight, the road surface, the wind, and how much you pedal yourself. Models with a dual battery roughly double the range. Every product page shows the manufacturer's stated range so you can compare.
How fast will my fatbike be delivered?
We do our best to ship your fatbike as quickly as possible. The product page of every fatbike shows an estimated delivery time. Shipping is free on orders above €45, which covers every fatbike. As soon as your package is on its way, you receive a tracking link by email.
