Is the Van Rixtel Dog legal?
Yes. The Van Rixtel Dog only assists you when you pedal yourself and stops at 25 km/h, with a 250W motor and no throttle. This makes it just an electric bike, not a moped. So you are allowed to ride it anywhere you can ride a regular bike.
How fast does the Van Rixtel Dog go, and am I allowed to increase its speed?
The Van Rixtel Dog supports speeds up to 25 km/h. Faster is not allowed: as soon as you tune an e-bike, it legally counts as a moped. You are then required to have insurance, a license plate, and a helmet, and your warranty becomes void. With our bikes, you ride safely within the rules.
Do I need a driver's license, insurance, or registration for the Van Rixtel Dog?
No. Because the Van Rixtel Dog supports speeds up to 25 km/h, it counts as a regular bike. No driver's license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance. However, bike insurance against theft or damage is a smart idea, but that’s up to you.
From what age are you allowed to ride the Van Rixtel Dog?
There is no legal minimum age for an electric bike like the Van Rixtel Dog in the Netherlands. Anyone can ride it, and wearing a helmet is not mandatory.
How far can you go with the Van Rixtel Dog on a single battery charge?
With the Van Rixtel Dog, you can ride about 50 km on a full battery. The exact distance depends on your speed, your weight, how much assistance you use, and the wind.
What warranty do I get on the Van Rixtel Dog?
You get a 3-year warranty on the frame and 1 year on the moving parts. If something breaks during that period due to a manufacturing defect, we will take care of it for you.

Van Rixtel Dog at GOfatbike

The Van Rixtel Dog is an electric cargo bike specially designed to carry your dog. Instead of a regular cargo box, this tricycle has a spacious box where your four-legged friend can lie or sit comfortably and safely. The motor assists you as soon as you start pedaling, even if the box is loaded a bit heavier. In this explanation, we go through how to transport your dog safely, how the bike rides, and what to watch out for before you choose.

The box and safe entry for your dog

The box is made of EPP, a lightweight and shock-absorbing material that is easy to clean. Handy, because a dog naturally brings sand and mud along. At the front, there is a sturdy door with soft-close, so your dog can walk in and out by itself. No lifting needed, which saves your back a lot. The box is low to the ground, making entry calm and clear, even for an older or uncertain dog. The load capacity is generous, up to about 200 kilos in total, so a larger dog can also come along.

Stability on three wheels

Three wheels provide stability. The bike stays upright when you stop, so you don’t have to balance while your dog gets in or out. That makes a big difference with an animal that moves or suddenly stands up. A handlebar damper with double security keeps the handlebar stable when the dog moves, so you don’t get a sudden jerk on the handlebar. At the front, there is a stand that prevents tipping over during entry and exit. Steering feels different at first compared to a regular bike because a tricycle doesn’t lean into the turn. After a few rides, you usually get the hang of it.

Range and battery

You can choose between a 450 Wh or 540 Wh battery, both from Phylion and neatly protected by a battery management system that prevents deep discharge. This is good for the lifespan. How far you get on one charge depends on many factors: your dog’s weight, the wind, how often you stop and start, and how much assistance you use. A fixed mileage number therefore says little. If you mainly take short trips to the forest, beach, or park, you’ll get quite far. For longer trips, choose the larger battery or bring the charger along.

Motor, gears, and controls

The Ananda rear wheel motor delivers 45 Nm and works with a torque sensor. This means the assistance adjusts smoothly to how hard you pedal, gradually and without jolts. Comfortable for your dog, who won’t be startled by sudden bursts. With eight Shimano gears, you can easily choose the right gear, whether you’re starting off with a full load or climbing a hill. The motor assists up to 25 km/h and tapers off above that, just like a regular electric bike, and there is no throttle. We advise against tuning the motor: the bike isn’t designed for that and you will lose your warranty.

Brakes, lighting, and safety

Braking is important when carrying weight, and that has been taken into account. The hydraulic disc brakes have extra-large rotors, so you can stop smoothly and controlled even with a loaded cargo box. The rims are spoke-free and therefore almost maintenance-free, which reduces upkeep. Enhanced LED lighting ensures you are well seen, even in the dark or rain. The bike is tested according to the EN17860 standard for cargo bikes, a reassuring thought when you take your dog along. Small details, but together they make the ride safer and more relaxed for you and your dog.

Who is this cargo bike for, and how to order

The Van Rixtel Dog is for those who want to regularly go out with their dog without the hassle. To be honest, this is a large and sturdy bike. Weighing around 59 kilos, you can’t move it with one hand, and you need space in a tight shed to store it. For those who have the space and often ride with their dog, that is more than worth it.
