Is the M20 legal?
Yes. The M20 only assists you if you pedal yourself and stops at 25 km/h, with a 250W motor and no throttle. This makes it simply an electric bike, not a moped. So you are allowed to ride it anywhere you can ride a regular bike.
How fast does the M20 go, and am I allowed to increase its speed?
The M20 supports speeds up to 25 km/h. Faster is not allowed: once you modify a fatbike, it legally counts as a moped. You are then required to have insurance, a license plate, and a helmet, and your warranty becomes void. With our bikes, you ride safely within the rules.
Do I need a driver's license, insurance, or registration for the M20?
No. Because the M20 supports speeds up to 25 km/h, it counts as a regular bike. No driver's license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance. However, bike insurance against theft or damage is a smart idea, but that’s up to you.
From what age are you allowed to ride the M20?
There is no legal minimum age for an electric bike like the M20 in the Netherlands. Anyone can ride it, and a helmet is not mandatory.
How far can you go with the M20 on a single battery charge?
With the M20, you can ride about 150 km on a full battery. The exact distance depends on your speed, your weight, how much assistance you use, and the wind.
What warranty do I get on the M20?
You get a 3-year warranty on the frame and 1 year on the moving parts. If something breaks during that period due to a manufacturing defect, we will take care of it for you.

ENGWE M20 at GOfatbike

The ENGWE M20 in black with dual batteries is an electric fatbike for those who like to ride long distances without needing to recharge along the way. You sit upright on wide tires, the motor assists as soon as you start pedaling, and the suspension absorbs bumps. What makes this model special are the two batteries, giving you a wider range at your disposal. In this explanation, we’ll go through what the M20 can do, who it’s suitable for, and what to consider before choosing.

Comfort and riding position

The M20 is built around comfort. You sit upright, with a relaxed posture that stays comfortable on longer rides. The dual suspension, in the front fork and under the saddle, dampens vibrations from cobblestones and unpaved paths. You can adjust the saddle and handlebars to your own height, so you’re not bent over or strained. A fair point: because of the thick tires and size, this is not a light, sporty bike. If you mainly want to be fast and agile through narrow streets, a more compact model makes more sense. If you’re looking for a stable bike for daily rides and weekend trips, this is a good choice.

Range and battery

This model has two batteries, allowing you to go much further on a single charge than with just one battery. You can remove the battery to charge it indoors, handy if there’s no outlet near your storage. Fully charging takes about four to six hours. The stated range is always a guideline and not a promise of exact kilometers. How far you really get depends on your weight, headwind, tire pressure, and how much assistance you use. If you ride mostly with full assistance or against the wind, the range is lower. If you pedal gently along, you’ll get more out of it.

Motor, speed, and regulations

The M20 has a 250-watt motor that supports you up to 25 km/h. The assistance kicks in as soon as you start pedaling; there is no throttle to ride without pedaling. This means the bike counts as a regular electric bike, so you don’t need a license, registration, or helmet. It’s best to keep the bike that way. Anyone who modifies the M20 to go faster loses that regular e-bike status and usually the warranty, while also putting themselves and others at risk. The standard setting is fast enough for daily use and keeps everything within the rules.

Tires, brakes, and safety

The wide 20-inch tires provide plenty of grip and roll smoothly over cobblestones, sand, and forest paths. You brake with disc brakes that work well even in wet conditions. With the Shimano gears, you can easily shift down for a climb or up for a flat stretch. The aluminum frame is sturdy and can carry a substantial load, making the bike suitable for a variety of riders. For visibility, there are LED lights front and rear, and the display shows your speed, assistance level, and remaining battery at a glance. The downside of all this material is the weight: lifting it to a floor is less convenient than with a light city bike.

Who is this fatbike for

The M20 suits people who commute daily to work or school and like to take longer rides on mixed terrain during the weekend. You sit comfortably, have enough support for strong winds or gentle hills, and maintain grip on loose surfaces. The bike is less suitable if you mainly want a light, foldable bike to take on public transport or if you want to ride purely for sport and speed. For comfort, stability, and a solid look, this is a logical choice.
